The International Decade for People of African Descent was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 in its resolution A/RES/68/237. The Decade runs from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2024 and has as its theme “People of African descent: consideration, justice and development”. An Intergovernmental Working Group has drawn up a programme for the decade, which calls for action at the national, regional and international levels as well as at the level of the UN General Assembly. The measures called for at the national level are based on three different pillars: recognition, justice and development.

On 25 June 2019, the Equal Opportunities Team, under the mandate of the Minister for Equal Opportunities and with the support of the Federal Foreign Office, organised an event to promote the Decade for People of African Descent at the national level. During this event, civil society and members of the Afro-descendant community were invited to share their needs and concrete recommendations with policy makers.
